July 2021 Advocacy Corner

By Cheryl Delk-Le Good posted 07-22-2021 12:55

Greetings!

July is proving to be quite the busy month in advocacy efforts along with the upcoming EducationUSA Forum 2021, which will certainly draw attention to the status of international students in the U.S.

We're thankful to the work and postings from NAFSA and the Alliance which are compiled here.  There are calls for action from individuals like you!  Tweet these articles to your Members of Congress and continue to stay up-to-date on issues through NAFSA's Connecting our World and of course, EnglishUSA posts.  The EnglishUSA Stakeholders event in October is now open for registration!

-On July 13, the U.S. House of Representatives' subcommittee on immigration and citizenship held a hearing, "Oh, Canada! How Outdated U.S. Immigration Policies Push Top Talent to Other Countries." An Forbes article on this hearing and the recording are available (retrieved from NAFSA resources)

-A Marketplace story (NPR) makes the case that international students and scholars are key to the U.S. maintaining its global leadership in science and technology and offers solutions to increase that pipeline in the face of competition from the U.K., Canada, and Australia (retrieved from NAFSA resources)

-The Alliance has completed its Visa Processing Survey (75% completion rate among members who run privately funded programs). Collecting this data is critical in our work together advocating for the Department of State to process more exchange visa applications (retrieved from Alliance posting to its members)

-The EducationUSA 2021 Forum begins on Monday, July 26th.  There are live sessions scheduled all week!  EnglishUSA is facilitating one on Monday.  Registration is free but limited!
